Boracay - The Sin Capital

Trevor Gordon
They call it the “sin capital” of the Philippines. Why not? Parties abound everywhere. So what if it’s a Tuesday, who says the bars aren’t packed on weekdays? Most local tourists visit the island not only for the beach, but also for the night life. The others trying to sound cool would refer to the island as ‘Bora”, and this irritates the local residents of Boracay. In fact, there is a local ordinance that was passed, banning local businesses from using “Bora” in their business names. Hence, it might be the nightlife that will magnetize you to this charming island, or it could be the beach. For some, it could be the local people, and for most, it is the complete experience of living a laidback lifestyle in Isla Boracay.

Global Recession Boosting Boracay Tourist Arrivals

Boracay tourist

There was an increase of Domestic Tourism that took place after the tragic incident in New York in 9/11, wherein our foreign tourist traffic dropped . But because Filipinos and expats living and working in our country hesitated in travelling abroad and discovered alternative destinations in the country like Boracay our tourist arrivals actually increased compared to previous years and propelled our upscale domestic tourism arrivals from our metropolitan cities to 40% of Boracay’s market .However, the increase of Boracay tourist arrivals in spite of the so called Global Recession was also a combination of countries affected by the recession and the unfortunate negative political incidents and climate change that affected other destinations.

Bizzare "Situations" on Cebu Pacific Budget Flights

Cebu Pacific

I have been coming to Boracay regularly for the last 12 years, since I have a vacation home on the island. I live in nearby Taiwan and was delighted, when about 5 or 6 years ago, the Philippines’ premier budget airline, Cebu Pacific, started flights from Taipei to Manila with connections to Caticlan. I was even happy that the flights left Taipei at 1:40am, which meant I could arrive in Catliclan at 7:30am. The flights from Manila to Taipei were also late, arriving in Taipei as 12:30am. So, I had two extra days on the island! I couldn’t have been more pleased. Of course, the additional savings on airline tickets was most appreciated.
